Director of Teaching School

North Avon Teaching School Alliance

Permanent, full-time £51,639 to £57,077 per annum

We are searching for an exceptional and innovative leader to fulfil an exciting new role as the Director of our newly formed Teaching School. This is a unique post and we are looking for an individual who brings self-reliance, creativity, innovation, ambition and determination.

If this is already sounding like you but you are wondering what a Teaching School is, think of it more of a ‘Training’ School, with the vision and purpose of providing first class professional development opportunities, at all levels, to shape the future of school improvements and teaching standards.

As Director of Teaching School you will lead the strategic and operational development of The Teaching School and assume overall responsibility and accountability for the 4 main Teaching School strands:

  • Initial Teacher Training
  • Professional Development (including developing Leadership potential)
  • School to School Support (including the development of recruitment and redeployment opportunities)
  • Research, Innovation and Development.

The Director of Teaching School will work alongside senior leaders within the Olympus Academy Trust (OAT), Castle Schools Education Trust (CSET) and the Teaching School strategic board to develop the vision, scope and remit of the Teaching School. You will work to develop partners and partnerships and to expand the client base for the Teaching School.

Some of your tasks will include but not be limited to:

  • To be overall accountable for the performance and delivery of the Schools’ Direct Provision, Professional Development programmes and commissions and School to School Support work that the Teaching School has responsibility for
  • To be overall responsible for the day to day management of the teaching school
  • To line manage those responsible for leading on the Teaching and Learning programmes, the Schools’ Direct programmes, the Continuous Professional Development Programmes and the School to School support and to build coherence between these key strands of Teaching School delivery.
  • To work with Trust staff and partners to establish and embed a vision for the Teaching School, which inspires and motivates the Teaching School partners within Trust schools and beyond in its wider Teaching School Alliance and other networks
  • To build a distinctive Teaching School culture and offer, that takes account of the richness and diversity of the Teaching School’s communities
  • To formulate overall aims and objectives for the Teaching School
  • To be responsible for developing the Teaching School strategic plan and driven by the Teaching School KPI’s at Trust, regional and national levels
  • To be responsible for developing the Teaching School business plan and risk register
  • To actively seek out and develop new business and funding opportunities to ensure there is a profitable and sustainable business model to enhance the Teaching School’s impact and influence
  • To source, secure and then deliver bids for funding new, innovative projects
  • To attend South West region and national Teaching School meetings and contribute to other regional groups to secure our KPI’s and maintain and enhance our Teaching School brand
  • To evaluate and be ultimately accountable for all Teaching School activities, ensuring there is a positive impact on the quality of teaching and pupil outcomes

What do I need to qualify for this job?

Knowledge and experience is critical to this role, but your background does not necessarily need to be from the education sector. A successful career with several years of experience as a dynamic and innovative L&D leader will stand you in good stead to drive and shape the Teaching School. What is critical is your proven ability to lead through others within a substantial middle or senior management role and a track record of directing and driving professional development with clear impact. Experience of development planning and writing and submitting successful bids is essential and previous project management experience, in particular in relation to driving business growth over a sustained period will be a distinct advantage. Engagement in research would be desirable.
